Born in Matagne-la-Petite in the Belgian Ardennnes, Philippe-Joseph-Benjamin Buchez was at first a supporter of the theories of henri de saint-simon and contributed to Producteur (the Saint-Simonian revue) before becoming one of the founders of Christian Socialism. The director of the Catholic newspaper L'Européen (1831-32; 1835-38) and a moving spirit behind L'Atelier, in 1848 he served for a time as president of the Constituent Assembly. In his Histoire parlementaire de la Révolution française (40 volumes, 1833-38), he sought to demonstrate that the revolution of 1789, in establishing popular sovereignty and equality, was in line with the message of the Gospel. Buchez's other writings include Introduction à la science de l'histoire (1833) and Traité complet de philosophie (1839-40).
